7 Drawing Warm-Up Exercises to Get Your Art Unstuck

If you have experienced the frustration of wanting to pull a specific line, and see the pen go elsewhere against your will, welcome to the club. Dexterity is built over time, but every time you start your drawing session you should still warm up to avoid accidents like that.

Watch the video or read the full guide below.

If you want that kind of personalized feedback on your specific drawings, the mentorship program is built exactly for that.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a drawing warm-up take?

it depends on you, and the day. Sometimes it takes me even 1 hour to get in the zone, but in general THESE warmup exercises are supposed to take no more than 20 minutes

Should I warm up every time I draw?

Ideally, yes. But if you only have 30 minutes for that session, just draw what you have to

Can I use these exercises as a full practice session?

If your goal is to improve your dexterity, yes, but little every day is better than all at once

What if warm-ups don't help and I still feel stuck?

You might be too tired, it's okay to take a break sometimes.

Do professional artists warm up?

If I can call myself professional (I worked on several commercial projects at least, lol), I do warm up. Does it count?

Want this explained for YOUR drawings?

Theory only gets you so far. In a 1-on-1 mentorship, I look at what YOU specifically are doing wrong and fix it.
